The government of Pakistan has completed the privatization of its national flag carrier, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), selling it to a private investment consortium for Rs 135 billion. The sale — one of the largest in the country’s history — aims to revive the airline after years of financial losses and operational decline.
    The Times of India

The winning bidder was a consortium led by the Arif Habib Group, which outbid competitors including Lucky Cement and Airblue. Under the terms of the deal, the consortium will initially acquire 75% of PIA’s shares and will have 90 days to purchase the remaining 25%.
    The Times of India

Most of the funds raised 92.5% will be reinvested into the airline’s operations, while the rest will go to the government as revenue. The government had previously assumed PIA’s large debt burden, estimated at Rs 654 billion to make the sale attractive.
    The Times of India

This move marks the end of state control over PIA, a carrier that once commanded regional prominence but was weakened by years of mismanagement and losses. Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif hailed the sale as a transparent and historic transaction.
