US eases sanctions on Russian oil sales to India during Iran conflict

    Russian oil

The United States has announced a temporary easing of sanctions that will allow India to purchase Russian oil currently stranded at sea. The move comes as tensions in the Middle East escalate during the ongoing conflict involving Donald Trump’s administration and Iran, raising concerns about global energy supply disruptions.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent described the decision as a “deliberate short-term measure” designed to ensure oil continues flowing through global markets and prevent a sudden energy shortage.

Why the US Granted the 30-Day Waiver

The waiver allows transactions involving Russian crude oil that is already stuck at sea, particularly near the strategic Strait of Hormuz. This narrow maritime corridor is one of the world’s most critical energy routes.

Nearly half of India’s crude oil and natural gas imports pass through the Strait of Hormuz, making the country extremely vulnerable to disruptions in the region.

Iran has threatened to attack vessels attempting to cross the strait following the outbreak of hostilities involving the US and Israel. As a result, millions of barrels of oil and gas shipments have been delayed, creating fears of a supply bottleneck.

According to Bessent, the waiver is intended only as a temporary stabilisation measure and will not significantly benefit Russia financially.

“This stop-gap measure will alleviate pressure caused by Iran's attempt to take global energy hostage,” Bessent said in a statement on X.

    Impact on India’s Energy Security

India is one of the world’s largest energy consumers and imports around 90% of its crude oil needs. Roughly 2.5 to 2.7 million barrels per day of those imports pass through the Strait of Hormuz from Middle Eastern producers such as Iraq, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait.

The disruption has raised serious concerns about a potential energy crisis in India. Reports suggest the country has oil and gas reserves sufficient for about 25 days, making uninterrupted supply crucial.

Meanwhile, gas supplies have also been affected. Petronet LNG, India’s largest gas importer, declared force majeure after its LNG tankers could not reach the Ras Laffan loading terminal in Doha operated by QatarEnergy.

As a result, companies such as Gas Authority of India Limited and Indian Oil Corporation have already started reducing gas supplies to industrial customers.

Russian Oil and India’s Import Strategy

Russian crude currently accounts for about 20% of India’s total oil imports. Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the US imposed sanctions on Russian energy exports to reduce funding for Moscow’s war effort.

Washington has repeatedly urged India to cut purchases of Russian oil. At one point, the Trump administration imposed tariffs of up to 50% on Indian imports, including a 25% penalty linked to Russian oil purchases.

However, India has consistently defended its energy strategy, arguing that it must secure affordable supplies for its massive population and that its trade relationships should not be dictated by other countries.

Since late 2025, India has reportedly begun gradually reducing Russian oil imports while increasing purchases from the United States.

In February, the Trump administration also announced a new trade deal with India that reduced tariffs to 18%, reflecting improving economic ties.

Oil Stranded at Sea Could Be Redirected

Energy analysts estimate that around 145 million barrels of Russian crude oil remain stranded on the water due to the current geopolitical tensions.

If commercial agreements are finalised during the 30-day waiver period, some of these shipments could be redirected to Indian ports.

However, experts say the move does not solve India’s deeper vulnerability to Middle Eastern supply disruptions.

    Global Energy Market Concerns

The conflict in the Middle East has created uncertainty in global energy markets. Any prolonged disruption to the Strait of Hormuz could significantly impact oil prices worldwide.

Economists warn that if the strait were blocked or severely restricted, India could face higher inflation, rising fuel prices, and increased fiscal pressure.

President Trump has also indicated that the war against Iran could continue for four to five weeks or longer, which may further strain energy supply chains.

    FAQs

Why did the US ease sanctions on Russian oil for India?

The US introduced a 30-day waiver to allow India to purchase Russian oil already stranded at sea. The goal is to prevent supply shortages and stabilise global energy markets during the Middle East conflict.

What role does the Strait of Hormuz play in global oil supply?

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important oil routes. A significant portion of global oil shipments passes through it, including nearly half of India’s crude imports.

How much oil does India import?

India imports around 90% of its crude oil requirements, making it highly dependent on foreign suppliers.

How important is Russian oil to India?

Russian crude accounts for about 20% of India’s total oil imports, making Russia one of its key suppliers.

Will the waiver benefit Russia financially?

According to US officials, the waiver applies only to oil already stuck at sea, meaning it is unlikely to provide significant new revenue for Russia.

              Conclusion

The United States’ temporary easing of sanctions highlights the complex balance between geopolitical pressure and global energy stability. While Washington continues to oppose Russia’s war in Ukraine, the 30-day waiver allows India to access stranded Russian crude to avoid an immediate energy crunch. However, the move does little to address India’s long-term dependence on energy routes through the Strait of Hormuz. With tensions in the Middle East continuing and the possibility of further disruptions looming, global energy markets remain on edge.
