Ukrainian and European officials had ‘productive’ talks on ending war, US envoy says

A White House envoy said on Sunday that he held “productive and constructive” talks in Florida with Ukrainian and European representatives aimed at ending the nearly four-year war between Russia and Ukraine.

Posting on social media, Steve Witkoff explained that the discussions focused on developing a shared strategic approach between Ukraine, the US, and Europe.

“Our collective priority is to halt the killings, ensure guaranteed security, and create conditions for Ukraine’s recovery, stability, and long-term prosperity. Peace must go beyond a mere cessation of hostilities and provide a dignified foundation for a stable future,” said Witkoff, who serves as Donald Trump’s special envoy to the Middle East.

These talks are part of the Trump administration’s ongoing diplomatic push to end the conflict. While the US has actively pursued negotiations, progress has been complicated by sharply contrasting demands from Moscow and Kyiv. Russian President Vladimir Putin has recently reaffirmed his maximalist stance on Ukraine, even as Moscow’s forces advance on the battlefield despite suffering significant losses.

In parallel, negotiations with Russia are reportedly continuing. Kremlin envoy Kirill Dmitriev said on Saturday that discussions in Florida were proceeding “constructively” and would continue over the next few days. Dmitriev met with Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, according to Russian state media RIA Novosti.

For Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy tweeted that diplomatic efforts were “moving forward quite quickly” and confirmed that the Ukrainian delegation in Florida was actively working with the American side.

However, the Kremlin denied that trilateral talks involving Ukraine, Russia, and the US were being planned, responding to Zelenskyy’s earlier suggestion of three-way discussions. Putin’s foreign affairs adviser, Yuri Ushakov, said, “At present, no one has seriously discussed this initiative, and to my knowledge it is not being prepared.”

Meanwhile, the humanitarian situation remains critical. Ukraine’s human rights ombudsman, Dmytro Lubinets, reported that Russian forces forcibly relocated about 50 Ukrainian civilians from the Sumy border region to Russia. Lubinets said the residents of the village of Hrabovske were illegally detained on Thursday and moved to Russian territory by Saturday. He has contacted Russia’s human rights commissioner seeking information about their conditions and demanding their immediate return to Ukraine.

On the European front, the French presidency welcomed Putin’s reported willingness to engage in dialogue with President Emmanuel Macron, stating that the decision on how to proceed would be made “in the coming days.” Macron’s office emphasized that “as soon as the prospect of a ceasefire and peace negotiations becomes clearer, direct talks with Putin will be useful,” noting that the Kremlin’s public agreement is a positive development.

Additionally, EU leaders announced on Friday that they would provide €90 billion ($106 billion) in support to Ukraine over the next two years to meet military and economic needs. Although differences with Belgium prevented the use of frozen Russian assets to fund the aid, the required funds will instead be raised through capital markets.
