Three American fighter jets were mistakenly shot down over the State of Kuwait late Sunday in what US officials have described as an apparent “friendly fire” incident amid escalating regional conflict.

According to the United States Central Command (Centcom), Kuwaiti air defences fired on three US Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle aircraft during active combat operations linked to the widening US-Israel campaign against Iran.

All six crew members aboard the jets ejected safely and were later recovered. Officials confirmed they are in stable condition.

    What Happened?

Centcom said the incident occurred at approximately 11:03pm ET on Sunday during a period of intense military activity that included Iranian aircraft movements, ballistic missile launches, and drone attacks across the region.

“During active combat … the US Air Force fighter jets were mistakenly shot down by Kuwaiti air defenses,” the command said in a statement.

A video circulating online appeared to show one of the aircraft falling from the sky over the Al Jahra area of Kuwait, with at least one pilot seen parachuting to safety. Separate footage showed what appeared to be a pilot being assisted by Kuwaiti civilians.

Kuwait acknowledged the incident and confirmed that an official investigation has been launched.

    Pentagon Response

At a Pentagon briefing, Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, confirmed the loss of the aircraft but stressed they were not downed by enemy forces.

“I am grateful for the safety of the crews, and we know that this was not from hostile enemy fire,” he said, declining to provide further detail while the investigation is ongoing.

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth did not reference the incident in his remarks.

Meanwhile, Iranian state media, citing the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, claimed Iranian forces had struck a US aircraft that later crashed in Kuwait — a claim contradicted by US officials.

    Broader Context: Escalating Regional Conflict

The friendly fire episode comes on the third day of a rapidly intensifying conflict that began when President Donald Trump ordered airstrikes on Iran in an operation dubbed “Operation Epic Fury”.

    • The strikes were launched without congressional approval, marking a significant expansion of US military involvement in the region.
    • Iran has responded with missile and drone attacks targeting multiple countries in the Middle East, including military facilities used by the US and its allies. A British airbase in Cyprus was among the sites reportedly targeted.
    • Regional air travel has also been heavily disrupted, with Turkey suspending flights to several Gulf nations and thousands of flights cancelled worldwide.

US officials confirmed that at least four American service members have been killed and several others wounded since the conflict began.

    About the F-15E Strike Eagle

The F-15E Strike Eagle is a twin-engine, fourth-generation fighter jet originally developed by McDonnell Douglas in the 1970s. The “E” designation refers to its dual-role capability, meaning it can conduct both air-to-air combat and air-to-ground strike missions.

The aircraft remains a core component of US air superiority and strike operations globally.

    FAQs

    What is “friendly fire”?

Friendly fire occurs when military forces accidentally attack their own personnel or allied units. These incidents typically happen in fast-moving combat environments involving multiple air and missile defence systems.

How could Kuwaiti air defences mistake US jets for hostile aircraft?

During periods of intense missile and drone activity, radar systems and air defence operators must rapidly identify incoming objects. Confusion, misidentification, or communication breakdowns can lead to tragic errors — particularly when multiple threats are present simultaneously.

Were any US personnel killed in this incident?

No. All six crew members ejected safely and were recovered in stable condition.

    Has Kuwait accepted responsibility?

Kuwait acknowledged the incident and confirmed it has launched an investigation. US officials have described it as accidental.

Did Iran shoot down the aircraft?

US military leadership has stated clearly that the jets were not downed by enemy fire. Iranian media claims to the contrary have not been supported by US officials.

What are the wider risks of this conflict?

The incident highlights the danger of rapid escalation in a multi-country conflict zone. Airspace congestion, missile exchanges, and cross-border operations increase the risk of miscalculation, accidental engagements, and civilian harm.

    Conclusion

The mistaken downing of three US fighter jets over Kuwait underscores the volatility and complexity of the current regional conflict. Even among allied forces, the fog of war can produce dangerous and costly errors.

While the survival of all six crew members offers relief, the episode raises serious questions about coordination, identification systems, and airspace management during high-intensity combat operations. As investigations proceed, the incident serves as a stark reminder that in modern warfare, confusion can be as deadly as enemy fire — and escalation carries risks far beyond intended targets.
